Since 1986, Birchard Public Library has worked with other public libraries and Vanguard-Sentinel Adult Career Center to offer Project READ, which provides adults in Sandusky, Seneca and Ottawa counties with free reading tutoring and help with English for speakers of other languages. Any resident age 18 or older may participate, either as a student or a tutor.
- Students – Students meet with Project READ staff to complete a reading assessment. If the student reads below a 5th grade level, he or she is paired with a trained volunteer tutor who meets with them once or twice a week. Students learn to read, write, and spell using materials designed for adult learners.
- Tutors – Volunteers from the community are trained to provide appropriate tutoring. Volunteers meet with a student once or twice a week at times and places convenient to both. All volunteers must be high school graduates and successfully complete the training provided.
All potential students and tutors should call 419-334-6901, Ext. 418 for more information.
(In Sandusky County, Project READ is partially funded by The United Way.)
Reading Lab Option
Because interested students may have to wait until an appropriate tutor becomes available, Project READ offers a free computer-assisted reading lab at some locations. No computer experience is necessary. Please call the Project READ office for more information.
